Door two: the error check

First free care. Then check the bill like an auditor.

The summary bill you receive ("Facility services: $38,412") hides everything. The itemized bill shows every charge, code, and day — and itemized bills carry recurring, findable errors. Request it the same day you request the assistance application; the two tracks run together.

Start with the application (door one)

The recurring errors

How a dispute runs

  1. Request the itemized bill (and, for big bills, your medical record for the stay — you have a federal right to it).
  2. Mark each suspect line: date, code, charge, and the reason ("not in record," "duplicate of line 114").
  3. Send the dispute to the billing office in writing, line by line, and ask for a corrected bill and an account hold while it's reviewed.
  4. Keep the assistance application moving in parallel — errors reduce the bill; assistance can erase what remains.

Set expectations honestly: professional bill auditors charge per bill or take 25% of savings with minimums ($5,000 bills at one national service), and advocates bill $125–$150 an hour. For most bills, a methodical self-check with a real checklist — the kit's — finds the same recurring classes. What no one can do is promise a percentage: any service that quotes you savings before seeing the itemized bill is guessing.
